Motorola Razr 2024 review

Last year's Razr, and the one several owners chose over the newer model on purpose.

The verdict

The 2024 Razr is the value pick of the line and, for some buyers, the better phone outright: the vegan leather back grips where the 2025 is slippery, and everything that matters day to day is intact. The camera is where you feel the price.

Buy it if

  • You want a folding phone at the lowest sensible price
  • You want grip without a case — the vegan leather back is the most-praised thing about it
  • You are coming from a mid-range slab and care more about size than speed
  • You want wireless charging, which the cheaper flips often skip

Skip it if

  • You are coming from a Pixel and the camera is what you care about
  • You want the newest Android release out of the box
  • You want the fastest chip available in a flip

What it is

The 2024 Razr, still widely sold and now at a price the newer models cannot match. Its external display is 3.6 inches — a large step up from the 2023 model — and the main screen is the same 6.9-inch panel the 2025 line uses.

What makes this model interesting is not the spec sheet. It is that owners who compared it directly against the 2025 chose this one.

Why some owners prefer it to the 2025

The reason given is grip. The 2024 has a soft vegan leather back that owners describe as a pleasure after years of slippery glass phones; the 2025 has a more slippery finish. One owner who compared both concluded the 2025's only clear advantage was the hinge, and that the back was a step backwards.

That is a subjective call and you may weigh it differently. But it is worth knowing before you assume the newer model is automatically better.

Coming from a Pixel

Several owners switched from a Pixel 7 or Pixel 8, and their accounts line up. Speed and battery life are comparable, with only slight lag noticeable when launching some apps. The fold is the reason they switched and they do not regret it — one reports moving over entirely rather than swapping the SIM back and forth as planned.

What you lose is specific and worth naming: Pixel's call screening and voicemail transcription have no equivalent here, and Pixel's photo editing is better.

The camera is the clearest gap. Owners describe it as perfectly acceptable but visibly behind a Pixel, particularly in bright light. If photography is why you buy phones, this is the wrong phone.

The screen protectors you must not remove

The phone ships with factory-applied screen protectors on the folding display, carrying warnings that removing them voids the warranty. This surprises people. Leave them on.

It also raises a fair question nobody has a clean answer to: what you do when one eventually cracks. Budget for a service visit rather than a peel-and-replace.

The crease and the fold

Noticeable if you look for it, ignored within a week by most owners. Open, the phone reportedly feels like a smooth continuous slab. The closing mechanism draws consistent praise — well damped and satisfying to shut.

One underrated point: folded, with the screen protected on the inside, the phone feels safer in a pocket without a case than a conventional slab with a large glass face.

Buying renewed

The listing this page links to is a Renewed unit. Renewed Razrs are common and generally arrive in good condition, but two things are worth checking before you order: the seller's rating, and whether a charger is included, since renewed listings often ship with a cable only.

The factory screen protectors described above should be present on a properly refurbished unit. If they are missing, that is a reason to return it.

Who it competes with

Against the Razr 2025 you give up 300 mAh of battery, a newer Android release and a slightly faster chip, and you gain the leather back and a lower price. Against the Plus and Ultra models you give up performance you may not need. It is the sensible entry to folding phones.
